Handout – the Four Causes

Every thing can be thought of as a compound of matter and form. To state the matter and the form of a thing is to give two causes of a thing. Aristotle in fact thinks that there are four causes. We are interested in causes because we think we have knowledge when we know the causes of some thing, and why it must be the way it is.”

From Introduction to Ancient Philosophy by Cathal Woods – Handout on Aristotle on Nature and Cause
