Explain how the Bible portrays the creativity of God

a. Explain how the Bible portrays the creativity of God (25 marks)

The way the Bible presents God as involved in his creation

  • Is God needed to sustain the world in existence?
  • God hovering over waters. John Day says, God’s “control of the waters is simply a job of work”
  • Clear picture, in Genesis 1 and 2, of a beautiful, harmonious world
  • Clear instructions given to mankind

The imagery of God as a craftsman

  • Idea of God as a potter in Genesis 2:7, creating Adam from dust
  • Anthropomorphic
  • Job 38 – creating foundations
  • How should we read Genesis – literally or myth?
  • Humans – superior? Psalm 8:5-6 “You have given dominion over the works of your hands”; Genesis 1: last, Genesis 2: first; Genesis 1:26, made in the image of God
  • Compared to humans “See, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him?” (Job 36:22)

The concepts of omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence

  • In Job 38-9 God shows a range of knowledge

  • Role in creation: Genesis 1-3
  • Job 38: 12 “Have you commanded the morning since your hands began, and caused the dawn to know its place”
  • Isaiah 40: 22-23 God seen as sitting above the Earth and having the power to reduce princes to nothing

  • Transcendent vs immanent
  • Moves over Earth (Genesis 1)
  • Present in Garden of Eden (Genesis 3)
  • Present at foundations of Heaven and Earth (Job 38)
  • God is unique – supreme above all creation

The concept of “creation ex nihilo”

  • Creatio ex nihilo or shaping a pre-existent matter? Formless void in Genesis 1 and Psalm 104
  • Creates humanity’s dependence on God
